Financing Agreement signed between the FDRE Ministry of Finance and the World Bank to fight against the impact of COVID-19 Epidemics in Ethiopia

 

Today, 3rd of April 2020, a Financing Agreement amounting to US$82.6 million (ETB 2.64 billion) that is made up of 50% loan and 50% grant is signed between the FDRE Ministry of Finance and the World Bank (International Development Association) in support of the government’s effort to prevent, detect and respond to the threat posed by COVID-19 and strengthen national systems for public health preparedness in Ethiopia.

The resource will be used to strengthen the coordination of preparedness and response operations at national and subnational levels;  reinforce the screening procedures at the points of entry; strengthen  surveillance capacity for early detection of cases, alert management and follow up of contacts; strengthen laboratory capacity for the diagnosis of COVID-19;  increase the capacity to rapidly isolate and provide optimized care for persons suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19; implement optimal infection and control measures in healthcare settings and communities; increase awareness and informed decision-making among communities; and to provide and pre-position medical supplies and commodities, and other logistics for COVID-19 management.

The Financing Agreement was signed by H.E. Ato Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance and Ms. Carolyn Turk, the World Bank Country Director for Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan. Due to the current global Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the signing was done via electronically, complying the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation for social distancing.
