Austria Advances Bilateral Ties with Ethiopia Through Reforms and Innovation

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – June 25, 2025 - A high-level delegation from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance, led by the Vice Minister of Finance (who also oversees the mining sector, cybersecurity, and defense research activities) and including Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Simone Knapp, held a pivotal meeting today with H.E. Semereta Sewasew, State Minister for Finance Ethiopia. This engagement marks a significant step in Austria's proactive efforts to deepen economic and technical cooperation with Ethiopia, following several fruitful prior discussions with various Ethiopian ministries.

H.E. Sewasew welcomed Austria’s proposals, highlighting Ethiopia’s focus on modernizing public finance systems and digitalizing government services. She emphasized the urgent need to boost revenue, noting the practicality of Austria’s solutions, especially in light of IMF guidance.

Austria’s representatives showcased their advanced public finance and tax solutions. The AED agency presented its "Best Practice Austria" initiative, including an AI-based risk management system and an "out-of-the-box" e-tax platform, which can be installed within a year. They also offered solutions for grants and subsidies management.

In cybersecurity, Vienna-based Focus Group shared expertise in crypto fraud detection, training, and process development, demonstrating Austria’s capacity to bolster Ethiopia’s financial security. Meanwhile, Austria’s EPG, a mining-focused firm, presented its environmentally responsible mining waste remediation and precious metal recovery solutions, often through joint ventures with government entities.

Ethiopia expressed strong interest in diversifying investments, especially in mining, and in boosting exports. H.E. Sewasew stressed the importance of practical, sustainable solutions that build local capacity. The visit marked the second Austrian delegation in nine months, reflecting mutual commitment.
