Ethiopia and Germany successfully concluded high-level negotiations on bilateral development cooperation in Berlin. The Ethiopian delegation was led by H.E. Semereta Sewasew, State Minister of Finance, and the German delegation by Deputy Director-General Philipp Knill (BMZ).
During the talks, an agreement was signed with H.E. Reem Alabali Radovan, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in the presence of KfW Development Bank leadership, confirming Germany’s continued support for Ethiopia’s reform and development agenda.
The negotiations highlighted the importance of private sector engagement for Ethiopia’s economic transformation. German companies expressed strong interest in participating in strategic infrastructure projects, including the Bishoftu Airport. Both sides emphasized the significance of Ethiopia’s ongoing tax, customs, and financial sector reforms in creating a conducive business environment and promoting inclusive growth.
Germany confirmed €106 million in bilateral sectoral commitments. In addition, an additional €100 million through the World Bank’s Development Policy Operation (DPO) will support Ethiopia’s macro-fiscal stabilization and structural reforms.
The agreement also reinforces collaboration on good governance, sustainable land management, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and manufacturing development. Both countries stressed the importance of transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption in all joint development initiatives.
The next round of Ethiopia–Germany government negotiations is scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in 2027.
