Strengthening Development Cooperation in Bilateral Meeting Between Ethiopia and China

Addis Ababa – May 16, 2025 H.E. Semereta Sewasew, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance, held a bilateral discussion with H.E. Mr. Chen Hai, the Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia.
During their meeting, both parties recognized the strong and pragmatic partnership between Ethiopia and China. State Minister Sewasew praised China’s significant contributions to Ethiopia’s development, including investments, public project financing, humanitarian aid, and capacity-building efforts. She also acknowledged concerns raised by Chinese investors during the recent investment forum and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to addressing these issues. She urged the ambassador to encourage more Chinese investment and to strengthen economic ties through joint projects, capacity development, and humanitarian support.
Ambassador Chen Hai highlighted the growing interest of large and medium Chinese firms in Ethiopia, particularly in the power sector, with a focus on solar energy. He emphasized the importance of resolving issues related to taxes, security, and other concerns to attract and retain more Chinese investors. He assured his commitment to facilitating increased Chinese investment and deepening economic cooperation with Ethiopia.
Both sides expressed their dedication to resolving investment challenges through joint dialogues involving relevant stakeholders from both countries, aiming to foster stronger economic and development partnerships.
