Ethiopia and United States Hold Discussions to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

ADDIS ABABA – April 2, 2026 — H.E. State Minister of Finance Semereta Sewasew, alongside a senior technical delegation from the Ministry of Finance, held high-level discussions today with a visiting United States delegation led by Eric Meyer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury.
The discussions centered on Ethiopia’s comprehensive macroeconomic reforms, including debt sustainability, fiscal management, and tax policy, while exploring opportunities to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and advance economic and development initiatives.
H.E. Semereta Sewasew noted that the Government’s ongoing measures are yielding positive results, including improved domestic revenue mobilization and stable inflation management. She emphasized the continued importance of sustained reforms and institutional capacity strengthening.
Deputy Assistant Secretary Meyer commended Ethiopia’s reform achievements, highlighting the country’s progress in revenue performance and the successful implementation of a National Medium-Term Revenue Strategy. The strategy integrates tax policy and administration, with ongoing attention to digital systems, including excise tax processes, to support sustainable growth.
The dialogue also addressed global energy developments. H.E. Semereta highlighted that Ethiopia continues to follow changes in international fuel markets, which are factored into transportation planning and public service delivery. DAS Meyer noted ongoing U.S. engagement regarding the supply of essential imports, including fertilizer and medicines.
The meeting further underscored the deepening bilateral relations between Ethiopia and the United States, including collaboration in various development sectors and ongoing support for economic and social programs. DAS Meyer reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to support Ethiopia’s reform agenda and international cooperation. The partnership between the United States and Ethiopia also includes a significant focus on the health sector.
In her closing remarks, H.E. Semereta Sewasew expressed appreciation for the continued strategic and collaborative engagement of the United States, emphasizing that institutional strengthening remains essential to sustaining reform progress and promoting long-term economic development.
